Brussels

The city of Brussels is more than 1,000 years old. Today the name Brussels stands for an agglomeration of 19 communes forming one of the three regions of the federal Belgian state. Brussels is the capital of the Kingdom of Belgium and the headquarters of the French and Flemish communities. As European capital, the city is home to the European Commission and to the Council of Ministers of the European Union.Architectural attractions are the Gothic cathedrals, the Royal Square (Place Royale / Koningsplein) and the beautiful art nouveau and art deco buildings. The historic market square with its splendid guild houses and the impressive Gothic Town Hall, is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful town squares in Europe.

Welcome Address

Due to its central location in Europe, Brussels is also a crossover of many different cultures and a melting pot of population. But building Europe also means the development of new synergies. In this respect, we introduced the innovation of sharing the honour to hold such a prestigious event with our closest neighbours from France and Luxemburg. This is why for the first time in the sequence of meetings the Local Organising Committee has neither been regional nor national but international and composed of stroke physicians from Belgium and from Brussels’ two preferred sister cities, Lille and Luxemburg. Brussels being Brussels, it goes without saying that the social activities will also showcase the beauty and the splendour of the European capital. As the scientific and cultural programmes promise to be outstanding, we do believe that the forthcoming conference in Brussels will be a success and a great moment for all of us.

We look forward to welcoming you in Brussels in May 2006.
