2nd TIA Satellite Symposium
Nice, France 13 May 2008
8:30 - 16:30
Room Hermes
Chairs: P. Amarenco, France,
M.G. Hennerici, Germany
In 2006 a satellite symposium of the European Stroke Conference was
sucessfully organized in Paris to discuss the changes in concepts of TIA
definition and possibilities to distinguish transient from permanent
ischemia in the acute phase. With regard to early interventions and
treatment with antithrombotic agents, the old retrograde definition of
TIAs ( ie full recovery of clinical signs and symptoms within 24 hrs )
is no longer adequate, however, focal deficits rapidly resolving within
the first hours after onset are still considered to represent TIAs
within 24 hrs ( ie against the classical definition ), Furthermore,
patients are increasingly admitted to hospitals within few hours after
cerebral ischemia, and need immediate treatement plus prevention
measures after immediate confirmation of the diagnosis - how and whether
this should be done after a first visit in a TIA clinic or admission
to a stroke unit is a matter of discussion.
The 2nd full day satellite symposium of the ESC on TIA
in Nice on May 13th, 2008 will deal with these questions and
beyond: experts from all around the world have been invited to discuss
their opinion and report from their own countries and institutions, how
they deal with what was named TIA about half a century ago as you can
see from the programme attached.

extraordinary, extremely fascinating event per e-mail at a registration
